Frequently Asked Questions

We've put together a list of the most commonly asked questions that we get asked - either at the studio or on the phone. The list is always changing and growing, so please feel free to check back.

Don't see the answer to your question? Email or call us and we'll help you out as much as we can.

How long are your classes?

Our classes range from 45 - 75 minutes, depending upon the class and the time of day. All Pilates, Core Fusion and Belly Dance classes are 50 minutes. Our Gentle Yoga class is 45 minutes. Introductory Yoga classes are one hour. All standard Hatha classes last 75 minutes.

What do I wear to class?

Simply wear comfortable clothes that you can move freely in, preferably nothing too baggy, so that your instructor can see the finer points of your form. We don't recommend jeans, as they are too constricting. For Belly Dance classes, hip scarves are worn. We have them at the studio, or you are welcome to bring your own!

No special shoes are required for any of our classes. In fact, we ask that all shoes be taken off before you enter the studio, and there is a place for them in the lobby.

Do I need to bring my own mat?

As you begin to practice regularly, you will find that you'll want your own mat. However, as you start practicing, we understand that a mat is something you may not want to invest in until you are sure you'll be practicing regularly. And its pretty common to leave your mat in the car or at home. Therefore, mats are available to rent for just $1. The modest rental fee covers are expenses as we regularly sanitize and replace worn mats.

Once you get comfortable with your practice, we have mats in a variety of colors and styles for sale at the studio. You can also pick one up at any sporting goods store, or at your local Target or K-Mart.

What else do I need to bring?

Some people like to bring their own bottled water, although we do have that for sale at the studio. If you sweat a lot, you may want to bring a small towel to dry off your hands, feet and mat. Other than that, all you need to bring is yourself and an open mind and heart. We have all of the props you'll need, and no special equipment is required for any of our classes.

What about special shoes? What kind of shoes do I wear?

No shoes are necessary - in fact, we don't even wear shoes in the studio. We have a spot for them in the lobby. Some people like to wear socks, but we don't recommend it, as socked feet can slip when you are trying to hold poses.

Do I need a reservation to attend class?

Nope. Just show up a few minutes before class starts, give the front-desk greeter your name and pass-card (if you have one), and go right in. On your first visit, we ask that you show up about 10 minutes early, so that you have time to fill out our short student-information sheet and get a feel for the studio. After your first visit, 3-5 minutes early should give you plenty of time to get in and get settled. Of course, you are welcome to show up anytime up to 15 minutes early if you want some time on the mat to meditate or prepare before class starts.

How early should I arrive to my first class?

Our student information sheet is short but vital in helping us serve you properly. You should allow yourself about 10 minutes to come in, fill out the information, check in to class and get settled. Of course, you are welcome to show up anytime up to 15 minutes early if you want some time on the mat to meditate or prepare before class starts.

How much do classes cost?

For new students, you only pay $7 for up to 7 regular classes within one week. Day one starts when you walk in the door. After your 7 days expires, you can do a drop-in for just $12. When you start to attend regularly, you can invest in one of our money-saving pass-cards, which allows you to buy a bulk membership and reduce the price per class. Full details of our prices can be found here. We do not require memberships - you can come and go as you please!

When do you hold classes?

We have classes 7 days a week at various times, both morning and evening. We have a full schedule available at the studio at all times, or you can download a copy of the current month's calendar from our website.

I'm new to yoga. What classes should I attend?

The majority of our classes are designed for beginner-intermediate practicers. Any class labeled "Hatha" is a general yoga class. It will focus on deep stretching, building strength, relieving joints and relaxation. Even if you've never done yoga, you will be able to get through the class using the pointers the instructor provides.

Additionally, we have some more 'Beginner' options. Every Monday evening we offer Hatha Basics, a gentle beginner's-level practice where questions are encouraged. Finally, on the 2nd Saturday of every month, join Karen at 11:30 for a one-hour Introduction to Yoga.

What is the difference between yoga and Pilates?

There are several primary differences between yoga and Pilates, although both are beneficial in various ways. Yoga has a strong focus on deep relaxation, relieving stress, gain balance, and stretching the muscles. With yoga you can also gain strength throughout the entire body and lose weight.

Pilates is also a great strength-builder and weight manager. While yoga includes practices for the entire body and mind, however, a Pilates class will focus on the core muscles of the body. This includes the stomach, back, hip and gluteal muscles. All of these muscle groups work together as a core for your body, coordinating to keep you strong and stable. Keeping these muscle groups developed is vital to preventing basic injuries.

I have back pain. Should I take yoga or pilates?

If you are suffering or recovering from a back injury, we highly recommend you discuss any exercise program with your doctor before starting one.

Depending upon the nature of the injury, and your stage of healing, both have benefits. If you are still recovering from the injury, a gentle yoga class is best. It can provide soft stretching and relaxing of the muscles without straining them. As you heal, you will want to strengthen the back and supporting muscle groups. Once your doctor has "ok'd" you, regular practice of Pilates will be a great benefit.

I'm not a dancer. Will I like Belly Dance?

Sure! Our Belly Dance class is not structured for the professional or advanced dancer. Its a class where you can let loose and have a little fun. Oh yeah, and work some muscles you didn't even know you had. You don't have to have natural rhythm or the desire to dance in public. Our class is just a fun way to laugh with your girlfriends, get a good workout, and shake your hips. So give it a try ... what's the worse that could happen?

I've stopped by the studio to ask questions, but no one was there. When are you open?

We do not keep regular business hours at the studio. If you have questions and want to discuss things face to face, the best time to stop by the studio is around 15 minutes before class starts. If that doesn't work for you, please feel free to contact us and we'll respond as quickly as possible. If you'd rather talk face to face, use our contact link or call, and we'll be happy to schedule a time to come and meet with you.

What does Hatha mean?

Literally translated, it is composed of the two words "Ha" and "Tha", which mean "sun" and "moon". Generally speaking, "hatha" is the term we use to mean that the class is a general, non-specific practice. The classes tend to vary based upon the teacher's style and history, but will allow you all of the benefits of yoga. Our hatha classes are beginner to intermediate level and last around 75-minutes.

Why Tapas? Isn't that a food?

Tapas literally translates to ‘fire’ or ‘heat’, but we prefer to think of it as a burning enthusiasm. When we can generate an attitude of passion and conviction, we can generate the momentum to carry us forward. Tapas is a way of directing our energy. Like a focused beam of light cutting through the dark, tapas keeps us on track so that we don’t waste our time and energy on superfluous or trivial matters.
